From Cassis, in the south of France, to Yellowknife, in the Great North of Canada: a radical change of scenery—and temperature—for Hamza, who participated in Destination Canada 2017. The Parisian lover of French cuisine, trained at the prestigious Alain Ducasse culinary school, packed up his knives and moved to Yellowknife.
Celebrating Francophone Immigration Week: A Guest Series With the CDÉTNO
“My name is Hamza, I am 35 years old, and I worked as a cook in France for 17 years. After growing up in Paris and spending a few years in Cassis, I wanted to discover new horizons and live the Canadian dream. I was very interested in coming to Canada, especially for the beautiful landscapes. I didn’t know much about the Northwest Territories beyond the famous northern lights.
After I attended the Destination Canada salon in Paris with my wife Stéphanie in November 2017, I met with Sonia Idir from CDÉTNO. She convinced me to set off for adventure in Yellowknife. After I got a job offer and work permit through CDÉTNO, I began work as a cook at Copperhouse in August 2018 and have been working there since.
What I especially love about Yellowknife is how kind and friendly the residents are. And watching the northern lights is a surreal and magical experience. Now I’m just waiting for Stéphanie to join me for good in the next few months.”
