If you’ve ever wanted to try seal make sure you pay a visit to the Long John Jamboree Grounds!  Friday, from 1pm to 5pm, local artisans and chefs will be on hand to showcase their creations to the public in celebration of the versatility of seal in a modern market.

After a week of programming with Indigenous Chef Joseph Shawana, the owner/operator of Ku-kum kitchen in Toronto, local chefs will be presenting dishes of SeaDNA certified seal.

Did you know that SeaDNA is one of the only suppliers certified to supply seal meat that meets the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s certification for human consumption?

Dishes available include seared seal loin, seal pate and the traditional East coast dish of seal flipper pie.

Famed Indigenous designer D’Arcy Moses also taught local artisans some sewing techniques that work well with seal skin.  As any northerner will tell you, not much beats the warmth of sealskin mittens! Moses is renowned for his style and ability to help increase the demand for high quality modern Indigenous products.

Industry, Tourism and Investment is proud to partner with the Yellowknife Inuit Society to sponsor these events.  All of the meat was supplied through a local distributor who ensured the meat met the CFIA standards.  All of the raw materials for the sewing workshops were provided through Industry, Tourism and Investment’s Economic Diversification office.
