A new walking app is now available for residents and visitors to Yellowknife to facilitate self-guided tours along two routes of geological points-of-interest with stations explaining local interpretive geology and history.

It offers a multi-generational approach for Yellowknifers and those visiting the Diamond Capital to gain a broader understanding and appreciation for the rich geological history of the NWT and specifically the Yellowknife region

Developed by ITI’s Mineral and Petroleum Resources Division, the “NWT Walking Tour App” is available (free) from the App Store and Google Play store.  It was released as part of NWT Mining Week (June 21-27, 2020) which, this year took place entirely online.

The app is a first-release product that ITI plans to enhance over time. It currently maps out two separate geological walks with plans to add more in the future.

  • The Ranney Hill Trail Geology Tour is a 16-station, 2.5 km geological tour that highlights various geological points-of-interest such as quartz veins, shear zones, prospecting trenches from the 1930s, and outcrops of basalt and granodiorite.
  • The Yellowknife Downtown Walk has 14 stations highlighting geological points-of-interest and displays in downtown Yellowknife.
