The 17th annual Available Light Film Festival kicked off in Whitehorse and NWT filmmakers, artists and delegates are making their presence known.

The NWT Film Commission and NWT Professional Media Association are there representing the Territory’s film industry and helping to promoted NWT films and shorts.

Featured Films and Artists:

Three Feathers (World Premier): Based on a graphic novel by Richard Van Camp, this beautifully made dramatic film tells the story of three young men who have vandalized their small northern community. They are sent by its Elders to live nine months on the land as part of a circle sentencing process. There, the young men learn to take responsibility for their actions and acquire the values that have been lacking in their lives – humility, caring and respect. Author and Executive Producer, Richard Van Camp will be a festival key note speaker.

Elijah and the Rock Creature: Employing boldness and community to make her micro-budget kid-friendly sci-fi feature, Yellowknife director Jen Walden’s Elijah and the Rock Creature charms with warmth and creative special effects. A grieving boy and his mother embark on a trip to see the stars at the largest dark sky preserve in the world. Unable to contain his excitement, 10-year-old Elijah wanders away from his mother and loses his way in the vast wilderness of Wood Buffalo National Park.

Casey Koyczan, Nàhgą: a Tłı̨chǫ Dene multi-media musician will be performing at the opening event and featured in the festival showcase.

Dead North Film Festival: Sections from Dead North Film Festival will be screening.
