NWT Tourism’s annual tourism conference and AGM is underway in Yellowknife.

It began Tuesday with a Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI)-sponsored training day geared towards tourism businesses looking to capitalize on the NWT’s booming tourism numbers by marketing their products to a global audience.

ITI’s training was made up of two parts:

First, a Business-Market-Trade (BMT) Ready workshop presented by First Air’s Mike Olson.

The BMT Ready program helps tourism suppliers better understand how applying standards can help their business access new marketing, distribution, and sales channels when they develop their policies. It also provides tips and tools on how to effectively administer these sales to capitalize on more opportunities.

The second part of ITI’s training day featured Victoria Behune, President and CEO of the Ontario Tourism Education Corporation (OTEC) presenting the Service Excellence for Chinese Visitors program which OTEC pioneered and now delivers nationwide.

The program gave tourism businesses the knowledge, tools, and skills to build long-lasting customer loyalty with visitors from China. The session included information on language, culture, and protocol.

The programs are part of the GNWT’s wider effort to support and position NWT tourism operators to capitalize on the growing interest in the NWT’s spectacular tourism product.

As the largest renewable resource industry, tourism offers the most opportunities for NWT communities to broaden their economic horizons.

The GNWT’s support for tourism is laid out in Tourism 2020 — the NWT’s tourism investment strategy.
