Minister Schumann was on hand yesterday for the launch of the Canadian Minerals and Metals Plan at the annual Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada tradeshow in Toronto.

The plan seeks to position Canada as a global mining leader and sets the stage for Canadian governments to take action to support a competitive, sustainable and responsible industry.

The federal government has worked with provinces and territories to engage industry, non-governmental organizations Indigenous representatives and other partners and stakeholders in the development of the plan.

Minister Schumann is in Toronto to attend the annual Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada tradeshow and events. It is a key event for the mining industry; and one at which prospective developers and the financial sector gather to seek out new projects and partnerships, foster new relationships and build on existing ones.

For the GNWT, it provides an opportunity to build on the momentum gained at AME Roundup.

Speaking Sunday at an Arctic Mining Trends and Technology session hosted by the Trade Council of Denmark, Minister Schumann highlighted the GNWT’s history of fostering relationships between Indigenous and public governments and responsible developers to ensure that NWT residents and their communities benefit from the resource development that is happening.

“The Northwest Territories offers a low-risk investment jurisdiction that is setting the bar for Indigenous partnership — one that contributes to improved outcomes for northern communities and meaningful opportunities for Northerners,’ he said.

This morning, Minister Schumann opened a panel discussion between Indigenous leaders and industry about attracting more investment into the NWT minerals sector.

On Tuesday the GNWT will host an “Invest NWT” event.  Representatives of the NWT’s mining industry and Indigenous governments will participate and present in a number of panels and speaking events organized to promote political support for mining and investment in the NWT; and to increase awareness and understanding of the NWT’s potential with industry and other stakeholders.
