It’s been a long time, but it’s great to see visitors back in our communities experiencing the beauty of the Northwest Territories again; for the first time in two years! Early indicators are tracking full flights to the NWT, and reports from tourism operators are already citing new bookings into 2023.
As COVID-19 restrictions are eased at our borders, ITI is working to help the tourism industry in the NWT get back on its feet.
On March 1st, Minister Wawzonek introduced the Resident Readiness Strategy. It was developed, with Northwest Territories Tourism, to help re-instill the sense of pride that NWT residents have about their territory, promote the value of tourism, and help us all safely welcome visitors again.
The “You’re Invited to Share the Spectacular NWT” Campaign Announced
NWT residents have always been known for their welcoming spirit and we will all need to be ambassadors for our territory and guides to its Spectacular features.

Since 2020, ITI has worked with Canada’s Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) and Northwest Territories Tourism to support tourism operators and businesses through the COVID-19 pandemic and to ensure that they are positioned today to recover.

Tourism is vital to the NWT economy. Prior to the pandemic tourism was a steadily growing sector. In 2018-19 visitor numbers were the highest they had ever been at 120,110 and visitor spending had exceeded 200 million.
