Urban Hide Tanning Initiative Winds Up In Yellowknife

An initiative to bring Indigenous traditions to the Northwest Territories' largest urban centre winds up today at Somba K'e park. 

Dene Nahjo — a Yellowknife-based Indigenous leadership organization — hosted hide tanning workshops at the park July 11-19, offering memberssof the public an opportunity to experience and learn about an ancient tradition. 

Elders, instructors, and experienced hide tanners joined together over the sessions to tan more than 10 hides using various regional techniques while creating traditional tanning tools in the process. 

The Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment contributed funding as part of its mandate to support culturally-based tourism initiatives. 

Additional funding was contributed by City of Yellowknife, the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre, Denesoline Corporation Ltd, and Sacred Fire Foundation.
