The NWT Film Commission returned to the Whistler Film Festival this month where a number of NWT productions have received their initial acclaim. It was an opportunity to build on their success.

Looking Back: NWT Film Takes Whistler

From December 2-5, Film Commissioner Camilla MacEachern and Film Officer Amos Scott took wall-to-wall meetings at the leading Canadian film festival.

The objectives were twofold

“We made the case that the NWT is a great place for guest producers,” MacEachern explains. “It was also an opportunity to highlight and promote the skill and talent that is emerging in our sector – including the inventory of individuals and businesses that can provide expertise and services to productions filming on location in our territory.”

They got some help getting that message across from Mason Mantla – an NWT Professional Media Association Vice President and emerging Indigenous filmmaker from Behchoko. Mantla joined the group at many of its meetings – representing the interests, values, and perspectives of local practitioners in the territory’s growing industry.

“This kind of networking has historically resulted in new opportunities for our membership,” says Mantla. “I’m hoping the discussions we had this time around will do the same.”

The trip was sponsored by the NWT Film Commission as part of their efforts to build opportunity for the local industry, while attracting more producers to the Northwest Territories.
