For the second year running, the Yellowknife Farmer’s Market is gearing up for another season by hosting Lunch & Learn sessions to help northern gardeners get the most out of the short summer season.  Run by Christine Barker, a horticulturalist with experience growing produce in Yellowknife, the workshops are designed for beginners and experts alike and address key topics such as:

  • Growing From Seed – what and when to start growing inside and how to germinate plants indoors
  • Soil & The Life Within – soil health, vermicomposting and compost teas
  • Microclimates & Companion Planting – how to use your greenhouse and other microclimates to extend your growing season along with what to plant together to improve plant health

This season’s final Lunch & Learn takes place on April 9th from noon until 1pm at the Yellowknife Music Space and will focus on how the Yellowknife Farmer’s Market can help local growers earn some extra money.  Titled Harvesters Table & Market Gardening, this session will talk about what to grow and how to market those extra carrots and potatoes you may have left over from an abundant harvest.

Industry, Tourism and Investment is proud to help sponsor this event as part of the implementation of the NWT Agriculture Strategy and encouraging value-added opportunities for locally harvested and produced products.
