The green thumbs at the community greenhouse in Fort McPherson have been buzzing with action lately. Potatoes, cabbage, turnip, kale, lettuce, radishes, beans, peas, beets and herbs are all thriving.  

Green thumbs across the NWT are digging in for another growing season. Here’s a look, by-the-numbers, at some investments and projects, past and planned, in NWT agriculture.

Are you a Northwest Territories (NWT) resident with a strong understanding of northern agriculture within your community or region? You may be a good fit for the NWT Agricultural Products Marketing Council. The Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) is seeking candidates to serve on the Council.

The very first Dehcho Agriculture Conference took place in Fort Simpson March 2-4, 2017.

The three-day workshop kicked off with a youth-focused day that welcomed 25 elementary and high school students and a total of 77 delegates from Fort Simpson, Jean Marie River, Fort Liard, Nahanni Butte, Sambaa Ke and Wrigley took part over the next two days.

Leaders in Northern agriculture will share and exchange their ideas and expertise this weekend as part of the Dehcho’s first-ever agriculture conference.

An intensive eight-month Commercial Fishermen Training Program will begin next week in Hay River. The program, which will combine classroom learning with hands-on work on Great Slave Lake, is a partnered initiative involving the NWT Fishermen’s Federation, the Department of ITI and the Soaring Eagle Friendship Centre. 

Tuktoyaktuk’s debut collection of aqpik (cloudberry) and cranberry jam received a hearty welcome from the community and abroad, with one jar even making a 10,000km journey to Chad, Africa.
