The Yellowknife Farmer’s Market is a hotspot for many food growers and harvesters, which made it the perfect venue for the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment’s (ITI) North Slave Region staff to talk agriculture.
The Growing Forward 2 (GF2) Program is an important funding source for many food growers and harvesters in the Northwest Territories (NWT), and we’re looking for input on how it can be improved.
Four agriculture enthusiasts from the Sahtu Region found themselves gardening and converting a sea-can into a chicken coop at the Inuvik Greenhouse earlier this month. Norman Wells has been buzzing with activity this season, literally. For the first time, beehives are being kept in the community. Travis and Susan Wright are the proud caretakers and harvesters of what may be the most northern beehives in the world.
The garden grow box project that took root in Norman Wells last year has flourished across the Sahtu. Through the project, elders were provided with garden boxes (3’x3’x1’), soil and seeds to grow their own produce and herbs.
BioBlitz Canada 150 has wrapped up following a handful of fun and intriguing events in several Northwest Territories communities. In the last month, events took place in Tuktoyaktuk, Inuvik, Norman Wells, Fort Simpson, and Yellowknife.
Northern agriculture pioneer, France Benoit, welcomed ITI Minister Schumann and MLA Vanthuyne to Le Refuge Farm today. In addition to touring the garden grounds, Minister Schumann and MLA Vanthuyne discussed with France the potential for agriculture in the Northwest Territories, the work being done by the Yellowknife Farmer’s Market, and the commercial opportunities for local food production in the North Slave.

The Northwest Territories’ (NWT) agriculture sector received great news on July 21 as the territorial government entered into a multi-lateral agriculture partnership. The Canadian Agricultural Partnership, (previous agreement called Growing Forward 2), will go into effect on April 1, 2018.
