Sector Support (SEED)

If you’re trying to improve your small-to-medium sized business within the renewable resource-based sector, this funding program can invest in the expansion or research you need to get there.

These investments are available in two possible categories: Capital Expansion Incentives and Sector Research Support.

These funds are provided under the Support for Entrepreneurs and Economic Development (SEED) Policy.

Who is eligible?

Indigenous organizations, business associations, municipalities, and businesses in NWT communities involved in the following sectors:

  • Agriculture
  • Energy
  • Film
  • Fishing
  • Knowledge Economy
  • Tourism
  • Value –added manufacturing

Capital Expansion Incentive

This incentive can offset loan interest associated with the capital purchases needed to help your business expand.

Funding

Up to $15,000 a year may be available to NWT business under this category.

Assistance Interest on loans from any GNWT agency or private commercial lender must be negotiated before the loan is approved.

Required Documents

  • Proof that your business is within one of the approved sectors.
  • Identification of the lending institution.
  • Full loan description including the terms, principle, and interest rates.
  • Outline of the scope and intent of your project to include budget, quotes, and related statements.
  • A historical financial statement including income, cash flow, and balance sheets for three years prior
  • Financial projections for the next three years.
  • Any other relevant information related to the proposal. This may include requests from the GNWT for additional information to assist in evaluating the application.

Equity Requirements

  • Group 1 communities (Yellowknife, Hay River, Fort Smith, and Inuvik) – 30%
  • Group 2 communities (all other communities within NWT) – 20%

Sector Research Support

If you’re looking to develop new products or packages, or working on enhancing your strategic advantage in priority sectors, this contribution can help.

Funding

Up to $25,000 annually may be available to NWT businesses to complete activities like:

  • Feasibility studies and strategic plans enabling businesses to increase their competitive advantage.
  • Professional assistance when developing a strategic plan which could attract potential investors like:
    • Legal advice
    • Accounting
    • Appraising assets
    • Document preparation
  • Sector-specific marketing campaigns.

Documents Required

  • Outline of the scope and intent of the project including budget, quotes, and related statements.
  • The names of any outside parties providing assistance to the project.
  • Any other relevant information related to the proposal. This may include requests from the GNWT for additional information to assist in evaluating the application.
