With approximately 1,800 shoppers, the NWT Chamber of Commerce’s Handmade Market in October was a resounding success. But don’t take our word for it, here’s what some of the artists had to say:

  •  “It was extremely valuable for exposure and for sales.  It also promoted NWT arts and showed appreciation for the artists.”
  • “I enjoy every minute of this market. Everything was organized so well, couldn't not be any better.”
  • “Enjoy this event because of the space and atmosphere created as a more upscale show rather than say a school gym where everything is crowded. You are able to showcase your work better. It is well run, advertised and successful.”
  • “Really appreciated that there was no table fee. Often the cost of table rental and electronic POS can negatively impact revenue. Also liked meeting/seeing the NWT Arts folks and participating in one of the benefits of the program.”

NWT Arts and the NWT Chamber collaborated to make the event possible and agree that the feedback and success mean that they will do it again.

Linking artists directly to consumers, helping provide networking opportunities, and further developing business skills such as point of sales systems are some of the way that NWT Arts helps artists expand their business beyond their immediate community or region.  Collaborating on events like the NWT Chamber’s Handmade Market is an effective means to support artists on a number of levels.

The variety of wares was truly expansive ranging from traditional arts to writers and musicians (thanks to a playlist of northern artists). Tourists who attended were able to get a taste of more than the North Slave thanks to SEED Funding that was provided to artists from outside of Yellowknife to help them with travel and other related costs.
