The Łı́ı́dlı̨ı̨ Kų́ę́ Regional High School recently held a Career Fair for students and the general public.
ITI’s Stephanie Hardisty, Manager of Tourism and Parks in the Dehcho Region, and Susanne Chambers, Tourism and Parks Assistant for the Dehcho, were on hand to provide information on the NWT’s tourism industry and the potential that it holds.
They talked with students and residents alike about different post-secondary institutions with tourism programming as well as summer jobs. They even highlighted that ITI is looking to hire a summer student to assist a parks officer this summer.
“We had great conversations about our tourism industry, the growth it has seen, and the career opportunities that come with a robust and vibrant tourism industry,” said Chambers.
Among the hot topics of conversation: working with visitor information centres, territorial Parks and the government; and becoming a tourism entrepreneur.
There was a lot of interest in becoming a Registered Tourism Operator. Students asked about starting an accommodation business or food and beverage service; and being able to conduct guided tours for visitors.

“I will never forget seeing their eyes light up when they began to understand the breadth of potential in our tourism industry and saw all of the sectors involved in making a tourist’s trip truly spectacular,” Hardisty says.
Attending Career Fairs such as this is just one way the Department of Industry, Tourism, and Investment continues to support tourism in the territory and the diversification of the economy overall.
