Tourism Safety Planning

Effective April 2018, detailed safety plans are required under the Tourism Act for all tourism operator licences. This requirement applies whether the licence is new, amended or renewed.

To promote and encourage compliance, the GNWT is sharing the following support information about safety planning to raise awareness about this new requirement among tourism operators in the NWT:

  1. A safety plan guidance document is available for download here, or through the Tourism Development Officer at your regional ITI office. If you already have a comprehensive safety plan, please review your plan to ensure that you have addressed the information described in this guidance document.
  2. Sample safety plans are available for download below or through the Tourism Development Officer at your regional ITI office.
  3. A one-day session focusing on risk management awareness training is available for tourism operators upon request through the Tourism Development Officer at your regional ITI office. More information about these sessions can be found here
  4. A list of organizations with risk management expertise that can assist with developing or reviewing safety plans can be found here

Please note that this support information is provided for information purposes only.  It does not contain any warranties, representations or quality commitments, whether express or implicit, nor does it contain any guarantees regarding the correctness, integrity, and quality of the information. All persons who rely on the information contained therein do so at their own risk.

It is the sole responsibility of each tourism operator to ensure that their operations comply with all applicable guidelines and standards, including but not limited to any standards imposed under the mandatory public liability insurance. The GNWT does not accept liability for any direct or indirect loss or damage arising from, connected with, or relating to a tourism operator’s failure to meet those guidelines and standards.
