Residents of Norman Wells embraced their first-ever farmers market on August 27 – but not for long.  Within the first two hours of the market all wares, including locally-grown produce, baked goods, and arts and crafts, were sold out!

Plus de 300 personnes se sont rendues au marché fermier où les ventes générées ont totalisé 30 000 $. La population a pu également profiter de certaines animations comme un plouf, un concours du meilleur chili et un concours du plus gros mangeur de tartes.

A large group of North Slave youth spent some sunny days learning lessons about gardening when the Youth Gardening Camp ran in Yellowknife August 9-11. 

Seniors in Norman Wells were able to pluck lettuce, kale, carrots, radishes and herbs from their own gardens this summer as part of a new agriculture project sponsored, in part, by the GNWT’s Industry Tourism and Investment’s Sahtu Regional Office.  

Yet another agriculture initiative is bringing new opportunities to youth in Yellowknife this growing season.

The Northwest Territories’ northernmost region has expanded its roots in small-scale food production over the past year thanks to a partnership between the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment’s (ITI) Beaufort Delta Region and the Community Garden Society of Inuvik (CGSI).

With endearing recipes names like, Jiggling Lemon Trout and Poor Man’s Lobster, a promotional cook book promoting Fresh Fish from Great Slave Lake will debut this weekend in association with one of Yellowknife’s foremost tourist events.
