After a busy circuit that saw NWT-linked films showcased at festivals in Vancouver; London, England; Edmonton; Reykjavik; and Toronto, NWT films will be celebrated at home this week.

The 13th Annual Yellowknife International Film Festival runs November 5-10. View the full schedule here.

The event kicks off with a special screening of Red Snow at the Chief Drygeese Centre in Dettah on November 5, followed by a collection of films and Q&A sessions at the Capitol Theatre in Yellowknife.

The themes, styles and content are wide-ranging: from a documentary about the greatest sports video game of all time – NHL ’94; to the reawakening of Dene traditions with the first moose skin boat to navigate the Nahanni River in 100 years, to a feature length documentary starring the Yellowknife dump.

The caliber of local representation is strong. Films Red Snow, Aurora Love, Three Feathers, River of Forgiveness, Summer of Smoke and Pixelated Heroes, all have strong linkages to the NWT, and ITI’s Film Commission was pleased to assist those projects through the Film Rebate Program and the Support for Entrepreneurs and Economic Development Program.

When asked how this year’s festival stacks up against its inaugural year, Jeremy Emerson, YKIFF Festival Director says, “We are seeing way more feature film content and generally more NWT content than before. It really shows the growth and maturity of the film industry in the NWT when you see longer format content being created! In the beginning we had around 5-6 short films at the most but now we have nearly half the festival with NWT content.”

The festival wraps up with the second annual NWT Film and Media Awards Gala. Nine prestigious awards will be presented at the Gala on November 9.  Get tickets or learn more, here.

The festival is hosted by Western Arctic Moving Pictures in partnership with the NWT Professional Media Association with support from ITI’s NWT Film Commission and other funders.
