Economic Opportunities in the Northwest Territories (NWT) were well-represented this week at the Opportunities North Conference in Edmonton September 12-14. The annual conference, sponsored in part by the GNWT’s Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI), focuses on creating and expanding opportunities and partnerships for Northern communities.

The creativity and inventiveness of their “Discover Our Secrets” marketing campaign has landed NWT Tourism on the shortlist for the WestJet Social Media Initiative of the Year Award. It is one of 13 national awards distributed annually by the Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC) and the Toronto Star to recognize success, leadership and innovation.

The second-annual Urban Hide Tanning Camp kicked off today at Somba K'e Park. Dene Nahjo — a Yellowknife-based Indigenous leadership organization — is hosting this celebration of Dene art, culture, technology, and history from September 5 – 15.
Elders and tanning instructors will lead caribou and moose hide tanning demonstrations using a variety of regional techniques.
Yellowknife-area campgrounds were all-but-full for the final long weekend of the summer with only tent pads open at Prelude, Reid and Fred Henne Campgrounds. At the Fred Henne Territorial Park Campground, over 35 campsites were decorated specifically for the weekend as campers vied for the second annual Labour Day Coolest Camper Award.
