The first of this season’s cruise ships is set to arrive in the Northwest Territories (NWT) next week and the territory’s coastal communities are ready to make the most of the economic opportunities.

The garden grow box project that took root in Norman Wells last year has flourished across the Sahtu. Through the project, elders were provided with garden boxes (3’x3’x1’), soil and seeds to grow their own produce and herbs. 

BioBlitz Canada 150 has wrapped up following a handful of fun and intriguing events in several Northwest Territories communities. In the last month, events took place in Tuktoyaktuk, Inuvik, Norman Wells, Fort Simpson, and Yellowknife.

Minister Wally Schumann joined colleagues from across Canada this week at the annual Energy and Mines Minister conference in New Brunswick. As part of a busy agenda, Ministers discussed how governments can enhance public confidence in mineral resource development.

The Western Arctic Regional Visitor Centre in Inuvik has been a hub for fun events and activities throughout the summer and more are scheduled this week.

Northern agriculture pioneer, France Benoit, welcomed ITI Minister Schumann and MLA Vanthuyne to Le Refuge Farm today. In addition to touring the garden grounds, Minister Schumann and MLA Vanthuyne discussed with France the potential for agriculture in the Northwest Territories, the work being done by the Yellowknife Farmer’s Market, and the commercial opportunities for local food production in the North Slave.

Entrepreneurs and business owners in the Hamlet of Enterprise will receive some hands-on support to learn about mentorship opportunities, funding programs, networking, and business expansion.

The Mineral Resources Act would, at minimum, govern: mineral rights to explore and mine; benefits to residents (e.g., royalties); reporting on mineral types and locations; andrules for staking and maintaining mineral claims and mineral leases.
