Expansion and improvements are coming to Hay River’s Fisherman’s Wharf. The popular weekly market place, which currently operates only in the summer months, is structured around a strip of open-air stalls.

But thanks to support from the Department of Industry Tourism and Investment and CanNor, the town of Hay River will soon be constructing a multipurpose year-round pavilion at the Wharf.

The new permanent facility, complete with heating and electricity, will allow more vendors to sell their wares and extend the market season by four months.

In addition to the weekly market, the Town of Hay River anticipates using the new facility to host seasonal events such as the Polar Pond Hockey tournament and Hay River Jet Boat races; and to offer a unique environment for corporate meetings and conferences during the summer months.

GNWT contributions to the project were made under ITI’s new SEED Strategic Investments Stream and its  Community Tourism Infrastructure Contribution Program (CTIC).

ITI’s SEED policy supports projects and businesses that will advance business and economic activity and result in increased employment in our communities.  Programs like the CTIC, are delivered under the Tourism 2020 Plan through which ITI is investing in the growth of the NWT’s tourism sector.
