Colville Lake: One Small Community's Big Example

“Don’t just talk about it; go do it!” That has been the message time and time again from Joseph Kochon, Band Manager for the Bedzhi Ahda First Nation, as he relates his community’s approach to resource development. With a population of 157, his community of Colville Lake, Northwest Territories is one of Canada’s smallest. Its tiny size is in stark contrast to the area’s prodigious natural resource potential.

Indigenous Support for NWT Mining will be Clear in Participation at Round Up

Next weeks’ Association for Mineral Exploration (AME) Round-up in Vancouver, BC is one of the global mining industry’s premier events. It will be an important opportunity for the NWT to promote and sell its mineral potential to investors, exploration companies, and established players in the mining industry. As importantly, it is an opportunity to highlight the NWT’s willingness and capacity to welcome and support new mining projects.

One of Our Own: Community Relations Advisor, Valerie Gordon

Minister Schumann was presented this week with a commemorative photo of Grade 4 students participating in the Mining Matters program. For Community Relations Advisor, Valerie Gordon, who coordinates the GNWT’s support and delivery of the program, the happy smiling faces are an affirmation of the program’s down to earth approach – and the importance of using creative demonstrations to facilitate an understanding of mining in today’s youth.

ITI Recognized for Support of Mining Matters Educational Program

The Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment was recognized this week for its ongoing support of the Mining Matters Program. The industry-sponsored program, dedicated to delivering education on geoscience and mining to students in Grades 4-12, was presented in three regions this year by the Department’s Client Services and Community Relations Unit (CSCR).

REDI Tradeshow Visits Hay River

The second Resources and Energy Development Information (REDI) Tradeshow popped up in Hay River on November 9, 2017. Residents were invited to stop by, ask questions and have discussions with subject matter experts on several themes, including: alternative energy, mineral exploration and mining, petroleum exploration and development, geoscience, environment and natural resources, regulatory and enforcement, and Indigenous affairs.
