The Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk Highway (ITH), a 140km-long road that reaches to Canada’s arctic coast, is scheduled to open on November 15, 2017. While economic opportunities in the form of tourism, employment and business development have been heralded, unexpected opportunities in geoscience research have come along for the ride. The ITH crosses over permafrost terrain and this new research and monitoring can inform maintenance, regulation and climate change adaptation strategies related to this project.
Prospectors and exploration companies pursuing projects in the Northwest Territories (NWT) have one day left to apply for the Mining Incentive Program (MIP), which closes on April 29, 2017.
The deadline to apply for MIP has been extended to April 29, 2017.
New funding levels are now available under the Mining Incentive Program (MIP) following the recent program budget increase from $400,000 to $1 million. Prospectors can now apply for $25,000 (up from $15,000) and exploration companies can apply for $200,000 (up from $100,000), up to 50% of eligible expenses.
Minister Wlaly Schumann delivered introductory remarks at the Northern corridors workshop at the Arctic Oil and Gas Symposium in Calgary. His remarks highlighted the importance of synergy in developing physical and technological infrastructure projects to best capitalize on the North's resource potential.
A comprehensive overview of mineral activity in the Northwest Territories (NWT) in 2016 is now available. The Mineral Exploration Overview is produced by the Northwest Territories Geological Survey (NTGS) and provides an update on the progress of mineral exploration and mining activities in the NWT.
