Minister Bob McLeod Tours Diavik Diamond Mine, Delivers Remarks

DIAVIK DIAMOND MINE(APRIL 25, 2016) — Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment Bob McLeod today toured the Diavik site with colleagues from the Legislative Assembly. 

The Minister delivered some brief remarks congratulating the Diavik team on their success in building a strong, safe mine and the importance of partnership between government and industry.

Mining Education Comes to the Sahtu

Students in the Sahtu were the first in the Northwest Territories to benefit from a program aimed at educating young Canadians about mining – and its importance to maintaining quality of life.

The idea came from Frank Pope ITI’s Regional Petroleum Advisor based in Norman Wells.

“We’ve been talking oil and gas in the Sahtu for 30 years,” he says.  “I thought it was time to talk about mining – and the career opportunities that are available for youth in the NWT.”

When Pope learned about the Mining Matters Program, the plan was complete.

Socio-Economic Agreements

When an environmental assessment takes place for a major resource development, the GNWT asks for follow-up programs to be put in place in the form of socio-economic agreements.

The Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment is responsible for negotiating these agreements on behalf of the Government of the Northwest Territories. They reflect the commitments and predictions made by the company during its environmental assessment including:
