With maps, GPS and compasses in hand, the first-ever students of the territory’s Geoscience Field Assistant Training Program demonstrated their newly-learned skills to Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment Wally Schumann and MLA Cory Vanthuyne earlier today.
Residents of the capital flooded into the Katimavik Rooms at the Explorer Hotel for an opportunity to increase their understanding of resources and energy development in the NWT. It was the latest successful edition of the GNWT’s Resources and Energy Development Information (REDI) tradeshow in Yellowknife.
Students in the Sahtu once again benefited this week from a program aimed at educating young Canadians about geoscience and mining. Valerie Gordon of the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment’s (ITI) Client Service and Community Relations (CSCR) division was on the road with the Mining Matters team to help increase awareness and public education on the NWT’s most important economic sector.

YELLOWKNIFE (MAY 24, 2018) — The first-ever Geoscience Field Assistant Training Program began last week in Yellowknife.
Eight participants, supported by eight employer sponsors have signed on to take the five-week, classroom-based course, to be followed by 160 hours of on-the-job training. The Mine Training Society will offer wage subsidies of $21/hour to employers for the on-the-ground portion.
Meetings, panel discussions, and networking are on the agenda as the Minister and Department of ITI jump across the pond to push investment in NWT mining.
