The NWT’s first-ever symposium on pests, pathogens, and invasive species took place in Yellowknife April 9-13. While northern agriculture and agri-fod production has had minimal impacts on wildlife and wildlife habitats to date, our territory’s biodiversity is vulnerable to a number of threats – including invasive species (plants, animals and insects) that could threaten the sustainability of future commercial agriculture initiatives.

Almost everyone has seen a dog shaming video on YouTube, but dogs in the NWT are turning the tables — they love NWT parks so much, that they’re going to new lengths to ensure their owners keep them clean! It’s all part of a friendly effort from the department’s regional parks coordinators to encourage off-season parks users to chip in and get our parks ready as the snow and ice gives way to sun and sand.
The hike to the pinnacle of Bear Rock will leave a person sweaty and sore but the view is well worth it. Below, the community of Tulita sprawls out, the water of the Great Bear and Mackenzie Rivers weave and rush, and hills and mountainsides dot the landscape as far as the eye can see. It’s a view people would pay for.
Giving visitors the opportunity to purchase this travel experience through boat and guided-hiking tours was just one of the ideas generated at Tulita’s first-ever Tourism Conference.
The Northwest Territories has new fans. From March 24-28, 155 travel agency owners and partners landed in Yellowknife to experience tourism products and services. The group has impressive contact lists and a wide-reach amongst industry, which can bode well for the NWT's tourism industry.
